Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) spread through oral, vaginal and anal sex. Symptoms can clear up on their own however they can come back.
It is caused by a virus called herpes simplex, once you have this virus it remains in your body. The virus does not spread through your body, it stays in a nearby nerve and cuases blisters in that area.
Genital herpes is highly contagious and can be passed on:
- from skin to skin contact with the infected area
- even when there are not visible blisters
- if a cold sore comes into contact with your genitals
- by transferring the infection on fingers to genitals
- sharing sex toys
